IFM Spatial Feasibility 120-003 Description: Front-line planners and foresters require good data and information to make the best possible forest management decisions, and especially when intensive forest management activities are being considered. Intensive forest management includes various practices that attempt to grow more and/or better quality wood fibre, and grow it faster, in certain locations. The Spatial Feasibility Assessment Project aimed firstly, to identify the areas legally available for intensive forest management under current forest management legislation, policies, and guidelines; secondly to identify areas that are potentially suitable for intensive forest management based on a suite of ecological conditions (including disturbance hazard, growth potential, and wildlife habitat provision); and finally, to generate a geographically referenced (spatial) database that will be available to both Tembec and MNR resource managers. The final product of the Spatial Feasibility Assessment Project, a GIS database rating suitability for intensive forest management is a useful planning tool, when combined with additional local and on-ground knowledge, and tempered with the art and science practiced by experienced foresters. This result has improved management of Tembec's forest license areas.
