Second Generation Tree Improvement
130-205
Description: The purpose of the Strategic Plan for Second Generation Tree Improvement Project was to develop and establish a strategic second generation breeding plan for the Edward Bonner Centre black spruce orchards. Once a strategy was defined, tree selections were made based on the results of first generation test analysis, with the intent of capturing additional genetic gain beyond what was possible with the first generation program. The selections were then examined in the field to determine their phenotypic value as candidates for the planned breeding program.
The successful results of the Strategic Plan for Second Generation Tree Improvement Project have provided the tools that Tembec requires to implement an innovative, efficient and cost effective second generation breeding program for black spruce across its boreal forest licenses. This program will ultimately have a direct and significant influence on the attainment of the Forestry Research Partnership’s overall objective of sustainably increasing allowable cut by 10% in 10 years on these licenses. The resulting strategy and plan will also serve as a template for other second generation efforts for several seed orchards now being undertaken by Forest Genetics Ontario, through the support of the Living Legacy Trust.
