Description: Breeding Zone Four first generation black spruce seed orchards are being managed to produce seeds with the greatest genetic gain at the least cost. In 2003, the orchard produced over 10 million viable genetically improved seeds which have the potential to produce seedlings that grow faster than average. The Edward Bonner first generation black spruce seed orchard is being managed to produce seeds with the greatest genetic gain at the least cost. The objective of the study is to conduct necessary management and maintenance activities within a number of Seed Orchards in Northeastern Ontario, in order to produce sufficient genetically improved seed to meet the forest management needs.
